2. LEE'S CORNER
The big news here is that we put our house up for sale yesterday and will be moving across town to West Nashville as soon as our property sells (that could be next week or 6 months from now). Not to be alarmed -- this is a good thing! Our address and phone number will be updated on the website as soon as we have the new information. Hoping to keep the same e-mail address at l.n@nashville.com.
Many thanks to all the newspapers which have run stories on the Howard Gray saga in the last three months. The Gannett people (USA TODAY) called us a few weeks ago to tell us it's been released to all the newspapers in their chain, which is quite a few.
Please note a new feature in this newsletter, LEE'S TALENTED FRIENDS. I hope in each issue to introduce a musical writer/artist whose music I admire. All of this in hopes that perhaps you may want to check them out, too. This issue we feature Danny Flowers, former lead guitarist for country entertainer, Don Williams, and writer of Williams' big hits "Tulsa Time" and "In My Younger Days." Danny and I have mutual friends here in town, but just met for the first time in the last year. Great guy. His new cd, "Forbidden Fruits and Vegetables" is superb and is endorsed on the cd cover by none other than Eric Clapton. One of the greatest and more important songs I have heard in recent years is "Read On," a very powerful, soul-provoking song which Danny wrote after the Oklahoma City bombing. As soon as I learn it, I hope to play it myself.
Take care and have a great rest of the summer.
3. LEE'S TALENTED FRIENDS (featuring Danny Flowers)
Okay, I admit it -- I'm going to take the easy way out and quote directly from Jack Bernhardt of the Raleigh News and Observer. I hope I'm not doing something illegal here, but if I am, betcha I'll hear about it!! (innocent smile). Bernhardt says about Danny:
"Flowers earned his reputation as a first-rate musician while playing guitar for 13 years in country star Don Williams' band. He's written memorable songs: Emmylou Harris recorded Flowers' 'Before Believing' on her 1975 debut album, 'Pieces of the Sky;' 'Gulf Coast Highway, ' which he co-authored with singer-songwriter Nanci Griffith, has been recorded by Griffith, Willie Nelson and Bruce Springsteen; and Williams hit the top of the chart with 'Back In My Younger Days."
"And Flowers's signature song, 'Tulsa Time,' became a No. 1 single for Williams on the country chart and for Clapton on the pop chart.
"Despite his success as a songsmith, Flowers has just recently begun to concentrate fully on his writing.
"'In the past two years, I've gotten to the point of accepting that it's okay to let this songwriting thing take it's place in my life,' he says. 'I've always pushed it aside and focused more on playing the guitar. But now it's like, you know what? I can do this! So, I'm working harder at writing than I ever have.
"I guess I feel that now I'm at a place with the guitar that I don't have to prove anything. Not that I'm the greatest, but I give myself a 95 percent on being able to express what I feel with it. If I hear it and feel it, I can express it and that's a nice, comfortable place to be with the guitar. Now I want to try to up my output of songs and find out what I can do.' " [end of Bernhardt's piece]
TO ORDER DANNY'S CD, I RECOMMEND YOU CHECK THE WEBSITE WHERE I FOUND THE ABOVE: http://www.groovetone.com/groovetonecommerce/showitems.cfm?CategoryID=106 If you have realaudio, you should be able to hear "Read On."
4. QUARTERLY QUOTE:
