1. WELCOME...
- - to our summer newsletter. I just returned this week from a 10-day tour in Missouri and Kansas. It was fun to be on the same bill as Woody Wright from the Gaither Homecoming gang at a Gospelfest in Clinton, MO. A really talented guy and funny, funny, funny. I had played at the United Methodist Church that morning, where the pastor is David Maggi. I hadn't seen Dave since our seminary days almost 30 years ago. I also got to have lunch with Dr. Charles Baughman and his wife, Doretta, who are delightful people and dear friends. Charles was my Old Testament professsor a St. Paul School of Theology in Kansas City.

The next Sunday I was at my home church in Oskaloosa, KS, then later that afternoon was part of a variety show hosted by old classmate, James Reynolds ("Abe Carver" on DAYS OF OUR LIVES). It was a benefit for the health care unit in our county. It was great to play old Beatles and Rolling Stone songs with my friend, Bill Leech, who taught me guitar in the summer of 1968.

I don't know why I'm going into all this other than to say it was a good 10 days and I learned a lot about myself personally and professionally. But to go into THAT would be another 50 or 60 paragraphs, so I think I'll quit while I'm ahead!

I hope you're having a peaceful, spiritually invigorating summer,
-- Lee

2. HIGHWAY HEROES -- Each newsletter features someone who has made a significant impact in the world -- someone I'd like you to know about. This issue's heroes are six women from my hometown of Oskaloosa, Kansas.

In April, 1888 they comprised the world's first recorded all-woman mayor and city council. Their election was news both in the U.S. and in foreign countries. Eastern newspapers made considerable note of it. It was also written up in British and continental newpapers. Congratulatory messages came from as far away as New Zealand. The women were Mary D. Lowman, mayor, 49; councilwomen: Hannah Morse, 45; Emma Hamilton, 39; Sadie Balsley, 36; Mittie Golden, 31; and Carrie Johnson, 23. They were elected by a 3 to 1 margin.

Here are some of their reforms: a Sunday closing act, a curfew law, anti-expectorating on sidewalk, new sidewalks, a new street grader, streets widened and cleaned, gasoline street lights replaced old coal oil lamps, a pound built to keep up stray livestock. Prohibition was enforced for the first time since its passage in 1880.

All but two of the group stood for re-election and easily won out. A local Farmers Alliance worked up this tune in compliment to the Oskaloosa women: "We have a lady council and a lady mayor, too/ We are pleased with our officials and we trust 'tis so with you/ We think they all are handsome and know they are true blue/ As they go marching on!"

4. QUARTERLY QUOTE

"Life is like a game of cards. The hand that is dealt you represents determinism; the way you play it is free will."
-- Jawaharal Nehru, India's first Prime Minister (1889-1964)
